Is too much fruit bad?

Short answer: too much of anything has its negative consequences

Long answer:

Fruit has so many benefits and gets so much unnecessary hate. These benefits include:

·       Fibre to help keep us full and keep our bowels happy

·       Vitamins and minerals to keep our bodies functioning efficiently

·       And carbohydrates/ natural sugars to give us quick energy

Fruits are generally quite low in calories as well so they can be a great snack to have if you are trying to manage your weight and daily energy intake.

For most people, 2 serves of fruit a day is recommended to help meet your daily micronutrient, antioxidant and fibre intake.

You might need more or less depending on your body size, energy demands and health conditions. Some fruits also have a higher sugar content/ glycemic index than others so some fruits might be more/ less appropriate depending on your goals.

Keeping all this in mind, I believe everyone should eat fruit daily (although the types and amounts may differ).

How much you eat will depend on how active you are and how much food you need each day. But too much fruit (e.g more than 2 serves a day) isn’t likely to cause things like weight gain or insulin resistance unless you are having significantly large amounts consistently, and this is mostly due to the carbohydrates.

Otherwise, there’s no reason to fear fruit and it might even help you have more energy for your training sessions or steer you away from your afternoon sweet-treat.
